Referrals

Temple University does not require most students to have health insurance, but we strongly recommend that you carry it.

While the Student Health Fee covers most visits with nurses and providers in Student Health Services, it is likely that at some time during your Temple career, you may need costly services, which must be provided outside of Student Health Services.

Services not covered by the Student Health Fee include

  • emergency room visits,
  • hospitalization,
  • orders for X-rays,
  • referrals to specialists,
  • surgery, and
  • ultrasounds or other diagnostic imaging tests.

If you have insurance, please make sure that your insurance works in Philadelphia. For example, some HMO plans do not work with doctors or hospitals in this area, or they require that you contact your care provider in your home community to make all referrals before they will cover the cost.

Call your insurance company before you arrive at school and ask how your plan works for out-of-town college students. If you are covered under your family’s insurance policy, please make sure that you have the card (or a copy of it) with you at all times.

If you do not have health insurance coverage, you can purchase insurance through Temple University at a group rate. Learn more about your health insurance options.
