Birth Control
Student Health Services offers prescription and nonprescription methods of contraception and counseling.
- Student Health offers these services for a low cash price.
- Insurance is not billed for contraceptives (here at SHS).
- A contraceptive prescription can be sent to a retail pharmacy. Because of the Affordable Care Act, many women with prescription coverage no longer have a copayment for a contraceptive prescription. The student is responsible for understanding her insurance benefits and copays regarding contraceptive prescriptions.
- Prescriptions written by providers outside Student Health Services are not filled at the Student Health dispensary.
The following contraceptive products are available at Student Health Services.
- Condoms are available in all bathrooms in Student Health Services. Condoms are also dispensed at the Wellness Resource Center (As of 1/1/2024, Temple students can get 20 free condoms per month).
- Emergency contraception (also called the morning-after pill)
- Oral contraceptive pills (products vary)
- Depo-Provera injections
- Nexplanon (arm implant)
Availability of supplies and specific products is subject to change. If you are interested in a form of contraception not listed, information about local resources for other methods such as an intrauterine device or contraceptive implant is available at Student Health Services. * IUD's are not available at SHS at this time. You can get these at Planned Parenthood or TUH Gynecology (215) 707-3008.
Birth control appointments are routine or “future” appointments. Call 215-204-7500 to schedule an appointment. A new birth control method can be started during an annual gynecology appointment.
If you had a gynecology examination elsewhere in the past year,
- you do not need another gynecology examination to receive birth control at Student Health,
- you should have a copy of your last gynecology examination (including results of tests done) sent to Student Health, and
- once your records are received, Student Health will schedule your appointment.
